2017 Volvo S60

As concern for both the environment and fuel economy grew in the early 2000s, Volvo Cars designed and began to sell the S60 compact luxury car. The market was quickly becoming saturated with budget compacts from mainstream car brands. Built with lower end materials, these cars felt every bit as cheap as their price tags reflected. As luxury car buyers lacked any truly viable options in this newer vehicle segment, Volvo decided to do something about it.

The compact S60 represented more than just a smaller version of a Volvo, it also gave hope to drivers who typically could not afford to buy premium brand cars. When it first came to the market for the 2001 model year, the Volvo S60 replaced the outgoing S70 model. While the S70 was technically a compact sedan, it lacked the modern look, feel, and efficiency that the S60 was able to seamlessly deliver from its inception. When it first came to the market for the 2001 model year, the S60 offered a fuel economy rating of 25 miles per gallon on the highway, and a starting MSRP of just $34,945. The compact luxury car from Volvo has evolved beautifully over the past fifteen years, with many changes, upgrades, and improvements made over the span of the sedan’s two generations.

2017 Volvo S60

The 2017 Volvo S60 represents the end of the car’s second generation, but before we look too far into the future of what lies ahead for the S60, let’s discover all that the 2017 S60 has in store. One of the most striking changes made to this model, from its first generation to the second, is its EPA classification. The S60 started out as a compact luxury car, but is now classified as a mid-size sedan. Despite this change in designation, the 2017 S60 is more efficient and better able to serve buyers than it ever has in the past.

Available in three incredible trim level packages and featuring a starting MSRP of $33,950, the 2017 S60 is one of the most affordable sedans in the premium brand’s lineup. Aside from affordability, the Volvo S60 has a lot of other things going for it, all of which make it a top choice for drivers seeking out an efficient and capable midsize sedan.

Fuel Efficiency

In the few years that large SUVs like the Hummer were popular choices among new car buyers, fuel efficiency was not a major point of concern. The popularity of these gas-guzzlers coincided with record low prices at the pump, and buyers were happy to have more car for their money. Alas, the low fuel prices soon disappeared, right along with the presence of these boisterous “monster trucks.” It seems as though American car shoppers have learned their lesson, and are turning to more efficient options, even when gas prices trend under the average price per gallon.

The 2017 Volvo S60 is an appealing choice for buyers who value savings at the pump, with a maximum fuel economy rating of 35 miles per gallon on the highway, and 31 miles per gallon in the city. Even with the shift from compact to midsize, the S60 has managed to deliver higher fuel efficiency standards than its so-called “smaller” past self.

Along with Volvo’s commitment to provide buyers with more economical options, the newest S60 sedan features an ECO+ function, which can be activated to reduce fuel consumption. Depending on driving style and road conditions, this easily activated system can reduce consumption by up to five percent – a seemingly small number, but one that adds quickly up over time. The ECO+ function also features a stop/start system, which stops the engine during idling in order to conserve otherwise wasted fuel. While cars may not be capable of having a thought process, we can imagine that if they were, the 2017 Volvo S60 would be constantly thinking up ways to save drivers money at the pump.

Power and Performance

Despite not wanting to drive around town in a gas-guzzling SUV that more closely resembles a school bus than it does a civilian passenger car, most drivers are not interested in sacrificing power and performance for better fuel efficiency. Rather than settle for one over the other, Volvo manages to deliver both efficiency and power in the 2017 S60 sedan.

The base S60 T5 Dynamic and mid-level T5 Inscription models both feature a capable 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with direct injection. Both of these trim levels come standard with front wheel drive, but Volvo’s all-weather capable all-wheel-drive can be added to either one of these sedans. Delivering a horsepower rating of 240 and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, the 2017 S60 Dynamic and Inscription models can each tow up to 3,500 pounds, proving just how impressive their power actually is.

The next trim level up is the S60 T6 AWD R-Design. Featuring a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Supercharged and Turbocharged engine with direct injection technology, this particular sedan delivers 302 horsepower, and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. Finally, the culmination of both luxury and power comes in the package known as the 2017 S60 Polestar. Equipped with the same engine as the T6 R-Design, the Polestar manages 345 horsepower rating, and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. To say that this sedan is powerfully impressive is an understatement. The base and mid-level models of the 2017 S60 come standard with front-wheel drive, and offer the more capable all-wheel-drive as an option. The T6 R-Design and the S60 Polestar both come equipped with Volvo’s responsive all-wheel-drive system standard, and are not available with any other drivetrain.

The T6 R-Design offers an advanced stability control system, a performance-enhanced sport chassis, and steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters for ultimate control around every turn. While all of the 2017 S60 models are capable, it is hard to argue with a sedan that has been designed to deliver absolute performance, capability, and fun from behind the wheel.

Volvo S60 Safety Pic

2017 Volvo S60 Safety

As most Americans know, Volvo Cars is celebrated for engineering some of the safest vehicles on the road. With the brand’s Intellisafe suite of safety systems, the 2017 S60 sedan comes with peace of mind that no other luxury midsize car can deliver.

The first component to Volvo’s Intellisafe system includes an array of intuitive safety technologies to help drivers navigate their surroundings more effectively and safely. Systems, such as Volvo’s Blind Spot Information center, and advanced auto-braking technology, make the 2017 S60 one of the safest vehicles in its class. City Safety automatic braking comes standard on all 2017 S60 sedans, giving drivers complete peace of mind from behind the wheel. If the system detects an imminent crash without driver response, it automatically applies braking pressure at speeds of 31 miles per hour or less to stop the sedan, and avoid a collision.

Another intuitive safety feature from Volvo’s Intellisafe System is new Adaptive Cruise Control. With automatic activation at speeds of 18 mph and over, this system will maintain your speed, as well as your preferred distance from the vehicle traveling directly in front of you. Keeping a safe distance between your car and others on the road is one of the easiest ways to stay safe and avoid collisions.
