2016 Volvo S80 – Summit, NJ
The 2016 Volvo S80 may not have seen any major design changes over the past few years, but that’s hardly a deal breaker. The design still looks good, and proves that there is something to be said for elegance in simplicity. The relatively new engine that was introduced in mid-2015 has provided a reliable and powerful boost, and it still performs efficiently in the 2016 model. Finally, this sedan is loaded with a full array of Volvo’s latest and greatest safety systems, both as standard and optional choices.
So even though it hasn’t received that many updates lately, it still ends up being a phenomenal sedan for the money. With a familiar and handsome design, fuel efficiency that’s coveted by many other vehicles, and a host of potentially the most advanced safety systems on the market — this luxury sedan is a tough competitor to beat.
The design of the 2016 Volvo S80 has remained relatively simple and untouched over the years, which isn’t a bad thing. It just means the engineers focused on making this a sedan that has a more practical exterior and saved the luxury looks for the inside.
The aerodynamic front fascia is complimented by a hood with a design that helps peel the wind back and over the windshield, while the arch in the hood ensures that it flows smoothly over the vehicle. The back window is cut at relatively the same angle as the front, and allows the wind to effortlessly flow off the back of the S80.
It’s Still Got Flair
Even though the design is clearly focused on efficiency, that doesn’t mean it was left completely stripped of character. The headlights on the front are simple, which makes the grille and bumper the center of attention. The chrome grille with the Volvo logo is the first thing your eyes are drawn to, followed by the two chrome lines that run along the bottom of the front end. Daytime running lights are nestled on each side of these lines and help balance out the brightness of the headlights. A defining line runs down each side of the S80, and the chrome trim continues along the bottom of the sides, surrounding the windows. The back is left relatively plain as well, with taillights that spill over onto the sides, and the Volvo logo sits proudly above the license plate. Dual-port exhaust tips round off the sporty and luxury feel, tying everything together nicely.
Certainly these exterior features exist on higher trims, but the fact remains that the base trim is still aerodynamic and handsome. The addition of the aesthetic features is like wearing jewelry. Not required to look good, but adds a touch of flair to the whole finish.
That engine that was introduced in mid-2015 still provides plenty of kick for this sedan, not to mention some great fuel-efficiency. The engine in question is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which provides 240 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This engine is the single choice regardless of trim level, and is paired to a front-wheel drive transmission — all-wheel drive is no longer available. This engine is able to return up to 25 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined, which is quite impressive for a mid-size sedan with this type of power on board.
It’s clear why Volvo didn’t feel the need to change the engine for this model. Supporting the efficiency is, obviously, the silky-smooth eight-speed automatic transmission’s shifts and the stop-start functionality. This feature will automatically shut the engine down when idling, which helps save fuel that would otherwise burn unnecessarily during pointless idling.
The S80 can accelerate from zero-60 mph in 6.6 seconds, which is average for a luxury sedan this size. There might be a few others out there that are quicker due to the addition of a stronger engine, but that also costs more money and fuel.
With that in mind, it’s safe to say that the 2016 Volvo S80 sits in a sweet spot, with an exceptional balance of power and efficiency, for a below-average price when you consider all of the other features available as well.
Volvo has always been known for giving their vehicles a wide arrangement of safety features, and they appear to be continuing with that tradition today. Naturally, you’ll find the typical safety features on board, such as antilock disc brakes and plenty of airbags. But also, you’ll find more advanced features like Volvo’s City Safety system.
Imagine having a co-pilot constantly on the lookout for any dangers that might pop up on the road. Allow us to introduce you to City Safety. Equipped with City Safety, radar sensors on the front of the S80 are used to detect any objects that lie ahead of the vehicle. Whether it’s pedestrians, a cyclist, or other cars, this system will be able to detect the danger ahead, warn you, then prepare the brakes so that when you hit the pedal, you are supported by optimal stopping power. If a collision is imminent, the system will automatically apply the brakes — in hopes of avoiding the accident altogether or, at least, significantly reducing the impact damage.
The S80 also has plenty of optional safety features as well, particularly from the available IntelliSafe suite. This bundle of systems includes things like Adaptive Cruise Control, 360-degree Surround View Technology, Lane Keeping Aid, Active High Beam Control, Blind Spot Information System, and Driver Alert Control with a Rest Stop Guidance function. To give you an example of how advanced these systems are compared to the others floating around on the market, let’s take a look at Driver Alert Control. This function can detect if you are being inattentive at the wheel — which could indicate drowsiness — and then provide a warning to wake you up and prompt you to take a break. Not sure where to pull over? That’s where the Rest Stop Guidance function comes into play. This function uses GPS technology to find a nearby place to park and take a break, then provides directions on how to get there.
This is only one detailed description of these safety features and the other available features are just as impressive and advanced.
